In my short time parenting, there have been a few moments that have been etched in my mind as unforgettable. Moments where I’ve realized the influence I have as a dad in a profound way. One of these moments came only days after Lily was born. We were told that she was “tongue tied”, meaning that her tongue was attached to her lower jaw by a thin piece of tissue. After being assured that it was common, we were told to stick our tongues out at Lily. By doing this, she would see us and begin to copy that same motion, stretching out her tongue sooner than she would otherwise.
I thought the idea was ridiculous. Here I was with my one day old, being told that if I stuck my tongue out at her, she would begin to mimic me. Despite my doubts, I began to stick my tongue out at Lily when holding her. Only a few days later, she began to try to stick her tongue out at us! I couldn’t believe it…
I realized that I had an enormous role in the life of my daughter. The phrase, “she will mimic you”, said by nurses earlier that week ringing through my head, I knew that my daughter would mimic me in more than the faces I made.
“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 11:1
This type of influence is built-in to my relationship with Lily. In many ways, she will follow my example. The question is, am I following the example of Christ?
Lily has continued to watch me. Almost a year old, she is more and more aware of what I say and do. As parents, we have a huge role in the lives of our children. The weight of it should bring us to our knees, praying for wisdom. I’ll spend the rest of my life learning how to be intentional with that influence. I’m excited for the journey.
