Theology and Doxology (Part 2)

The most important thing about you is what you believe about God.

In my last post, I talked about the fact that true theology leads to doxology (worship). So how important is right theology? If what you believe about God leads to your worship of Him, then your theology dictates the type of God you are actually worshipping. It’s a huge deal!

We are all worshipping something. We were made that way. A good definition for worship is “a believer’s response of all that they are – mind, emotions, will, body – to what God is and says and does” (David Peterson). I would amend this only in saying that even non-believers worship. And even believers respond with all that they are to the wrong things at times. The focus of our worship can be off. The bottom line is that what we worship will be exposed by how we live.

What you and I believe about God will be played out in the way that we live your lives.

When it comes to what we believe about God, if we are not watching our life and doctrine closely (1 Tim. 4:16), we will worship a god of our own making. A god who looks good and feels right but in actuality is very different from the God who’s revealed Himself to us in Scripture. (This is one of many reasons why we need to be Bible-saturated – what’s cultural is often times opposed to what’s Biblical.)

What do you BELIEVE about God? I could ask you or I could just watch your life. The latter would probably be a more accurate way to find out.
