Theology and Doxology

True theology leads to doxology.

Most of us are familiar with the term theology (the study of God), but what is doxology? Most of us hear that word and think, “praise God from whom all blessings flow…” However, the word doxology simply means an expression of praise to God. In other words, doxology is worship (and worship must be viewed as an expression of praise to God in ALL of life).

True study of God leads to worship of God.

But is this always the case? Because we KNOW the truth and yet we don’t always consistently worship God with our lives. Why the disconnect? The problem is with our theology.

Through our study of God, we come to know certain things to be true about His character. For example, God is compassionate, gracious, and just (Ex. 34:6-7). And yet, we don’t always live our lives as though God was really (I mean really) good, compassionate, and just. The reason for this disconnect is that we don’t truly BELIEVE that God is who He says He is. We may logically assent to it, but we don’t actually believe it. Belief that does not shape behavior is simply not belief.

For me lately, I have struggled to truly believe that God is sovereign and good. This is evidenced by my anxiousness when it comes to the future of our family. My point here is that I KNOW that He is sovereign and good. I see that in Scripture and I have seen that to be true in my own life. But when it comes to this specific area, I struggle to BELIEVE what’s true.

Theology that does not lead to doxology is not true theology.

Where in your life do you know truth but not really believe it?
